Case Study : major Hospital TB Ward
Usage:
Air filtration to reduce airborne bacteria and improve indoor air quality (IAQ) in Tuberculosis ward of the Cheng Hsin Rehabilitation and Medical Center in Taipei, Taiwan.
Method:
- Central Air Conditioning AHU (air handling unit) filtration media was treated with Bio-Kil anti-bacterial technology.
- Air sampling was conducted by staff of the Office of Director of Clinical Pathology Department of the Hospital over a period of 6 weeks (n=420) prior to Bio-Kil filter treatment. Then air filters were treated, and further air samples were take for another 9 weeks (n=630) on identical weekdays and time of the day.
- Air specimen were collected in patient rooms, hall, lobby and outpatient service counter.
- Separately the staff conducted 10 wind tunnel test s to get a measurement that is less influenced by variables like outdoor air and human traffic (see wind tunnel test graphic in appendix in the back).
Materials:
Air filters are secondary paper filter media.
Results:
30-47% measured reduction in airborne bacteria (lower range was in areas closer to outdoor).
Range 27% to 70% across 10 samples.
Average 57.5% measured reduction at sampling point closest to treated AHU filters.
Average 79% reduction in wind tunnel test.
Lowered cost due to reduced frequency of filter change.
